About Vauxhall/Opel
Opel and Vauxhall are vehicle brands within Stellantis. Adam Opel established his Rüsselsheim business in 1862 to make sewing machines; bicycle production followed in 1886 and automobile manufacturing in 1899.1
Vauxhall developed independently in Britain. Alexander Wilson established its marine-engine business in London in 1857. Vauxhall began building cars in 1903 and relocated to Luton in 1905.2
The brands share vehicle families, including the Astra compact range. Opel’s Kadett launched in 1936, returned in 1962 and adopted front-wheel drive in 1979. Opel changed its compact-car name to Astra in 1991, matching Vauxhall’s designation.3
