Expanding your garage...
Pelican works best when it knows the car you drive. With your car in the garage, Pelican can:
- Read your car’s data through an OBD scanner, such as fuel level, battery charge and tire pressure. See Connect an OBD scanner.
- Show the safety recalls posted for your model. See Maintenance and records.
- Show your car’s drivable range on the map as The Danger Zone.
Why Pelican asks for your VIN
Your VIN tells Pelican which car you’re driving when you use an OBD scanner. When the scanner connects, Pelican reads the VIN from the car and matches it to a car in your garage. Pelican then loads the parameters for that make and model, so the readings are right for your car.
Your full VIN never leaves your phone.
Add a car using its VIN

If you didn’t already register your car during the Pelican onboarding flow, open Settings > Cars & Connected Accounts and tap Add a car or account. The vehicle registration sheet opens.
You can typically find your VIN on a sticker on the windshield or on a label in the door frame. The easiest way to input your vin is with the VIN scanner.
- In the vehicle registration sheet, tap Scan.
- Point the camera at your VIN. Line up the VIN inside the frame.
- If the camera can’t read your VIN, you can type it in.
- Check the make, model and year.
- Tap Register this car.
Your car will now appear in your garage.
Add cars using a Connect Account
Pelican+Pelican can connect to Tesla and Volvo accounts. Connected Accounts allow you to see the current state of your car and control it remotely.
- In the vehicle registration sheet, tap Add a Connected Account instead.
- Tap Tesla or Volvo.
- Sign in to your manufacturer account.
Pelican adds your account’s cars to the garage. See Connected Accounts.
Add demo cars
To try Pelican before you add a real car, you can add simulated cars.
- In the vehicle registration sheet, tap Add a Connected Account instead.
- Tap Simulated cars.
- Tap a simulated garage to add it.
The demo cars appear in the garage.
Configure your buildout
Now that you’ve registered your car, you’ll want to make sure the buildout matches your car’s specs. This allows Pelican to show accurate range and fuel/battery levels throughout the app. To configure your buildout, see Edit the buildout.
